The Ghosts of Eden Park Title Sequence

2023 Auburn University AIGA FORM National Juried Show Animation Category Winner.

"The Ghosts of Eden Park," a true crime novel by Karen Abbot, chronicles the life of the notorious bootlegger George Remus, his rise to power and subsequent downfall, and the sensational murder that captivated the nation during the Prohibition era. In researching Remus' life, the imagery from his time and the overall era left a deep impression, inspiring a desire to bring these historical photographs to life. To achieve this goal, a frame-by-frame animation technique was utilized to reimagine the original photographs, breathing new life into these time-honored images. The color palette used was carefully selected from 1920's house paints, creating a richness and vintage feel that perfectly evokes the time period. The choice of song for the video, "Elizabeth" by New York rapper WestsideGunn, was also carefully considered. This selection was based on the jazz sample incorporated within the song and WestsideGunn's delivery of gritty, grimy lyrics, which aligns with the book's central theme of bootlegging as a form of organized crime. Given that the story is set in New York City, it was fitting to pay homage to a legendary New York rapper and incorporate a modern twist into a century’s old story.
